Two additional deaths linked to COVID-19 at Extendicare Kapuskasing (updated)

Two more deaths attributed to COVID-19 have been reported at Extendicare Kapuskasing.

In the long-term care facility's daily update, it reported two residents died yesterday. COVID-19 was listed by public health as a "contributing factor in their passing," reads the update.

The outbreak at Extendicare Kapuskasing was declared Jan. 7. About 70 staff and residents have tested positive. There are currently 13 residents and 14 staff with active cases. Fifteen residents have died. 

The health unit confirmed the new deaths around 8 p.m. Feb. 10. There have now been 24 virus-related deaths in the region since the start of the pandemic.

“We need to come together to support one and other. These tragic losses affect not only the families and loved ones of those who have passed but also the members of the community and the staff at the home,” said medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton in a statement.

To date, there have been 299 confirmed cases of the virus in the region since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 237 people have recovered.

The Porcupine Health Unit has not reported any new cases yet today.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
