Timmins could see a temporary curfew imposed during the COVID-19 crisis.

Meeting for their first time since a state of emergency was declared in the city, council gave feedback on imposing a curfew tonight. The members who spoke up were in favour of the measure.

A curfew was first brought up publicly April 3 by Mayor George Pirie when the emergency declaration was made and he talked about the measures being discussed to protect the local population during the pandemic.

No decision was made on the item, however, council was generally in favour of a 10 p.m. curfew.

“I don’t see any trouble with imposing it on a temporary basis during the emergency situation we have right now and the number of break-ins we have and criminals walking the streets at night looking for opportunities,” said Coun. Joe Campbell.

While it would mean an adjustment, Coun. Kristin Murray said there would be a payoff.

She pointed to San Francisco, where she said they were on the ball in terms of being aware and slowing the spread of the virus.

"So I think the work that we put in now going forward will really dictate where we’re going to end up,” she said.

The discussion did not include details on how a potential curfew would be enforced.
