Ontario reports 76 new COVID cases today, lowest since March 22

For the first time in months, Ontario has reported fewer than 100 new COVID-19 cases today. 

The province's public health agency reported 76 new cases today, which is the lowest reported cases in a single day since March 22 for Ontario.

Of today's new cases, 29 are individuals between the ages of 20 and 39 years old and another 25 are between the ages of 40 and 59 years old. 

The provincial government announced today Toronto and Peel regions will move into Stage 3 on Friday, leaving Windsor-Essex as the only health unit in the province still in Stage 2. 

Toronto Public Health has removed 13 cases from its report to Public Health Ontario today, and Peel Public Health reported just four cases based on today's epidemiological summary. 

Windsor-Essex has once again reported the highest number of new cases with 22 added to today's report.

Ontario's health minister Christine Elliott tweeted her "full support" to Windsor-Essex Public Health officials as they work to contain the virus locally.

There was one new death reported today, an individual over the age of 80.

The province has now confirmed 38,896 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario since the pandemic began and 89 per cent of those (34,741 cases) are now recovered. There have been 2,769 deaths reported. 

Of the remaining 1,386 active, lab-confirmed cases in the province, 91 people are hospitalized including 28 people in intensive care and 17 people on ventilators. 

Since last report, Ontario labs have processed 27,308 COVID-19 tests, bringing the cumulative tests-processed total to 2.1 million. 

In Northern Ontario there are 18 known active cases.

The breakdown for the health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 27 cases, rate of 23.6 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 35 cases, rate of 27 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 37 cases. There are no known active cases.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 70, rate of 83.9 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 79 cases, rate of 39.7 per 100,000 population. There are 12 known active cases.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. There is one known active case.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 44 cases, rate of 50.2 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 95 cases, rate of 63.4 per 100,000. There are two known active cases.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 262.3.
