Ontario reports 329 new COVID-19 cases and 454 recoveries

The province has also reported 40 new deaths today

Ontario is reporting 329 new lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, which is a 1.6 per cent increase in the total number of cases confirmed in the province.

The province’s public health agency is also reporting 40 deaths related to the coronavirus and 454 recoveries.

Of the deaths reported today, two were people aged 40 to 59, seven were people aged 60 to 79, and 31 were people over 80.

There are now 1,018 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 189 in intensive care units and 144 people on ventilators.

Today’s update states there were 15,137 tests completed in a single day with 13,395 awaiting results. Labs in the province have processed a total of 475, 058 tests.

The province has reported 21,236 lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases since Jan. 15, and of those 15,845 people have recovered and 1,765 people have died.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care reports 180 outbreaks in LTC facilities with COVID-19 cases confirmed in 2,690 residents and 1,672 staff. The Ministry has reported 1,269 deaths of long-term care residents as a result of COVID-19. Public Health Ontario has only included the deaths of 814 long-term care residents in the total number of reported COVID-19 deaths in the province.

The highest number of cases is reported in the 40-59 year-old age group (30.5 per cent), followed by the 20-39 year-old age group (23.8 per cent). Cases in the 60-79 year-old age group and the over 80 age group are about the same at 21 per cent. About 2.7 per cent of the province’s COVID-19 cases have been reported in people aged 19 and under.

Locally, there have been 65 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Porcupine Health Unit region.Of those, 49 are resolved and five people have died.

Testing at nine of the 10 long-term care homes in the area has also been completed. Since that surveillance started last week, three outbreaks at facilities have been declared. They are at the Golden Manor and Extendicare in Timmins, as well as the South Centennial Manor in Iroquois Falls.

Today’s report shows no movement in Northern Ontario cases from yesterday.

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases, with 80. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population among other health units in Northern Ontario. The rate there is 77.9 per 100,000 people.

According to today's report, which includes data from Jan. 15 to May 12, the number of cases at other Northern Ontario health units, as well as the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population are:

• Algoma Public Health - 16 cases, rate of 14 per 100,000 population

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 13.9 per 100,000 population

• Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 59 cases, rate of 29.6 per 100,000 population

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 80 cases, rate of 53.3 per 100,000 population

• Northwestern Health Unit - 15 cases, rate of 17.1 per 100,000 population

According to the report, in Northeastern Ontario, there have been 176 confirmed cases, and the rate is 31.5 per 100,000 population. In Northwestern Ontario, there have been 95 cases and a rate of 40. The provincial rate per 100,000 population is 142.9.
