Public Health Ontario has reported 313 new, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, which is the highest report for a single day since the first week of June.
The last time the province reported 300 or more new cases in a single day was the first week of June. For the month of August, daily cases ranged from as low as 57 to as high as 148. In September, daily cases have increased from 112 at the beginning of the month to between 150 and 230 last week.
Of today's new cases, 243 (76 per cent) were reported by three of the province's 34 health units. According to the breakdown of cases included in the Public Health Ontario epidemiological summary, Ottawa Public Health reported 60 new cases, Peel Public Health reported 71 new cases, and Toronto Public Health reported 112 new cases. Fifteen of the province's health units reported zero new cases for today's provincial summary.
The province has confirmed one new death today, an individual between the ages of 60 and 79 years old. Ontario has confirmed 2,816 deaths (6.3 per cent of all cases) related to COVID-19 since March.
To-date, Public Health Ontario has reported 44,817 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19, and has noted 39,974 of those cases (89.2 per cent) are now recovered.
There are currently 2,027 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province, including at least 47 people in hospital with the coronavirus. There are 17 COVID-19 patients in intensive care, and eight patients on ventilators.
The average incidence rate for the virus in Ontario is 301.5 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in the population. Each health unit's incidence rate ranges from as low as 28 cases per 100,000 to as high as 608 cases per 100,000.
There are five known active cases in Northern Ontario.
The breakdown for the health units is:
• Algoma Public Health - 29 cases, rate of 25.3 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.
• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 37 cases, rate of 28.5 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 38 cases.
• Porcupine Health Unit - 76, rate of 91.1 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases.
• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 96 cases, rate of 48.2 per 100,000 population. There are two known active cases.
• Timiskaming Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
• Northwestern Health Unit - 46 cases, rate of 52.5 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.
• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 103 cases, rate of 68.7 per 100,000.There are no known active cases.
The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 301.5.
