Health unit reports new COVID-19 case

The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting one new COVID-19 case today.

The 68th confirmed case in the region is a man in his 20s from the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, and Smooth Rock Falls. He was tested July 9 and is in self-isolation. According to the health unit, the investigation is ongoing.

Of the confirmed cases in the Porcupine Health Unit region, 59 are resolved and eight people have died. There is now one known active case of the virus.

This week, Timmins council is debating mandatory masks in public spaces. It's a conversation medical officer of health Dr. Lianne Catton says the health unit has also been having

"It is strongly recommended that all community members follow the measures proven to reduce the risk of spread – physical distancing, hand washing, cough and sneeze etiquette, not touching your face, and washing commonly touched surfaces. In addition, the PHU urges community members to wear a non-medical mask or face covering when inside public spaces, and, outdoors if physical distancing is a challenge," reads today's update from the health unit.

COVID-19 testing is open to anyone who feels they need to be tested, even if you don't have symptoms. To access testing, call your health care provider or the health unit.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst and Hornepayne.
