COVID-19: Here's the situation in Timmins today

With six new cases of COVID-19 being reported, the total number of confirmed cases for the Porcupine Health Unit region is 18.

As of this morning, PHU is aware of 323 tests being submitted locally. Of the 18 positive cases, five are resolved. They are waiting on the results of 70 cases, and 235 have come back negative.

The province reported a 21.7 per cent increase in lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases this morning with another 426 added to the list. Ontario's total confirmed cases now sit at 2,392 and there have been 37 deaths attributed to the virus as well as 689 recoveries.

While Timmins Transit is running, the city is reminding people that it should only used for essential travel — to get to and from work, or secure essential goods and services. 

City playgrounds, multi-use courts, picnic areas, gardens, dog parks, and other areas that could attract a lot os users are closed to the public. While they are being closed because of the provincial order, Mayor George Pirie said trails and open space areas can be taken advantage of, so long as everyone maintains a safe physical distance. The Polar Bear Express passenger rail service between Cochrane and Moosonee is being suspended as of April 7. The freight service will continue as scheduled.
