COVID-19: Here's the situation in Timmins today

Provincial cases jump, no new confirmed tests locally

While the number of COVID-19 cases reported provincially nearly doubled since yesterday, the number of confirmed local cases remain the same.

As of this morning, the Porcupine Health Unit is aware of 259 tests submitted locally. There are 10 positive cases (five in Timmins and five in Cochrane), 160 negative, and they are waiting on the results of 89.

Provincially, 351 new lab-confirmed cases were reported this morning, bringing the total number of positive cases to 1,706, which includes 431 people who have recovered and 23 people who have died from the virus. 

The PHU COVID-19 information hotline hours are extended this week, running from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. In today's daily health table update, Timmins Police Chief John Gauthier also said calls for service are being reviewed daily to identify trends, and gave the numbers for break-ins since March 24. Kirkland Lake Gold confirmed a worker at the Detour Lake Mine site near Cochrane has tested positive. The Porcupine Health Unit has contacted people identified as being in close contact with the worker, and the company has implemented further health and safety protocols. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that large and small businesses as well as charities and not-for-profits are eligible for a 75-per-cent COVID-19 wage subsidy. He said it translates to up to $847 a week for four months, back-dated to March 15. Watch the announcement here
