Attraction offers rare views in heart of the city (12 photos)

Bring your camera to take a peek into an active mine and get one of the best views of Timmins

A Timmins mine is digging deep and letting people catch a glimpse of it happening.

Be sure to bring your camera to check out the Hollinger Open Pit lookout, which has been offering people unique views this summer.

Located on Shania Twain Way off of Brunette, just south of Water Tower Road, the attraction offers a rare opportunity to look into Newmont Porcupine's active open pit operation.

With 360-degree views, on clear days, you can also see the Kidd Creek headframe, McIntyre headframe, Mount Jamieson and more. Looking into the open pit, the pit closest to the water tower has about 1.5 years of production to go, and the other one has about six to eight months of production to go.

Work to open the looking started in 2015. It was opened for a limited time in 2019 and this is the first season it's been open all summer.

The area is fully accessible. The road, parking lot, viewing areas and walking path are paved. There are now also three lookouts into the open pit, with the top-level offering a unique view of Timmins as well. There are 10 parking spots and one accessible parking spot available.

If you want to enjoy some of the walking trails in the city, the entrance to one is at the entrance.

The lookout is opened June 1 to Sept. 30. During that time, it can be accessed seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., except during blasting periods that run from 11:30 a.m. to noon and 3:30-4 p.m.
