No, this Blind River gas station was not charging 187.6 yesterday

Price posted on Esso station's sign was a result of repair work; actual gas price is 118.9

A photo snapped of the gas price sign at the Blind River Esso Aug. 31 went viral on social media yesterday.

On a week when gas prices jumped significantly in most communities — including 16 cents per litre in Sudbury and Blind River — people were outraged when the gas station's sign showed a price of 187.6.

But don't believe everything you see.

When reached by Sudbury.com this morning, the gas station manager, who didn't want her name used, said the photo came about because the business was getting its sign fixed.

“I can't believe people believe that,” she said. “We were getting our sign fixed, and the guy was changing the prices as he was fixing it. While he was fixing it somebody snapped a picture.”

The manager said the current gas price at the Blind River Esso is 118.9, a relative deal compared to Sudbury, where most gas stations are charging 128.9 after a spike of 10 cents per litre yesterday alone.

If you live in the Blind River area, you might want to gas up now; the manager mentioned gas prices would be going up there, but not by 60 cents per litre.
