TIMMINS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Timmins Chamber of Commerce has assisted the Ontario Chamber of Commerce in proposing economic strategies intended to inform the forthcoming federal government.

Released at the outset of the Canadian federal election, In Focus: Federal Priorities for the Ontario Economy provides Ontarians with a guideline of 5 essential principles outlining what Ontario businesses anticipate from each of the major federal parties’ platforms in policy commitments.

Of the principles outlined in the paper, it is suggested that Ontarians expect their government to allocate infrastructure and economic development funds conscientiously.

That means distributing funding on a per capita and principled basis, respectively.

“Ontarians and Ontario businesses currently pay disproportionately more than is returned in federal services and spending,” said Kurt Bigeau, incoming 2015-2016 president of the Timmins Chamber.

“The primary focus of the paper,” said Bigeau, “is to encourage the federal government in their responsibility to facilitate cooperative relations across all levels of government.”

Policy initiatives that focus harmoniously on economic development are encouraged so that Canada stands to be economically competitive while attracting foreign investment.

In turn, federal policy must advocate for the economic potential within Ontario and the sectors that are “poised for growth,” as the paper suggests.

“The absence of detailed data once retrieved from the long-form census has affected determining the portrait of Canada’s economic vitality,” said Bigeau. “Reforming the long-form census is among the principles presented in the paper, as it represents a vital means of informing policy-making at the federal level.”
