TimminsToday received the following news release from Cochrane Mayor Peter Politis regarding an upcoming audit of his election expenses:

*************************
COCHRANE - On June 22, 2015 a complaint was issued against my submitted election expenses suggesting that I was in non-compliance of the Municipal Elections Act of Ontario and that I have misrepresented the expenses associated to my re-election as the Mayor of the Town of Cochrane.

On July 20, 2015, the independent Audit Committee established for the Town of Cochrane allowed the complaint to proceed to an audit authorized under the terms of the Elections Act.

The Act allows the candidate in question (in this case myself) an opportunity to appeal the Audit Committee’s determination to allow the complaint to proceed to the next stage of an audit.

I have chosen to not exercise the option of an appeal.

I believe I have demonstrated that my expenses were not only claimed appropriately, but that I acted in good faith and with integrity at all times.

I claimed exactly what I paid for all expenses; I paid exactly what I was charged for all expenses; and I was charged exactly the same as everyone else in the election – I received no unfair advantage over my election opponents.

While I regret that public resources and money must be exhausted in order to satisfy the complaint itself, I simply have nothing to hide and welcome the review of an Audit at this point.

I look forward to having more to say at that stage of the process.
