A Timmins man has been fined $7,000 for an offence under the Public Lands Act.

Claude Vezina pleaded guilty and was fined $7,000 for encroaching on Crown land.

Court heard that in August 2013, a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry resource technician conducted an inspection on Vezina’s cottage property.

Upon inspection, it was discovered that a large prefabricated metal building hut was partially built on public land.

Vezina was ordered to apply for the purchase of the Crown land occupied by his building, and to bear all associated costs.

He was further ordered to remove a shed and propane tank, and rehabilitate a gravelled area, all on public land.

Justice of the Peace Monique Mechefske heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Timmins, on June 25, 2015.

The ministry reminds the public to check with the local ministry office before doing any type of work on Crown or public land.

To report a natural resources violation, call the MNRF TIPS line at 1-877-847-7667 toll-free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
