KAPUSKASING – The James Bay Detachment Crime Unit of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), assisted by the OPP North East Region Crime Prevention and Investigation Unit, the OPP North East Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS), OPP Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau (POIB), OPP Technological Crime Unit,  and the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) is currently investigating a series of arsons and online death threats that occurred between April 13, 2015 and May 10, 2015 in the Town of Kapuskasing. 

As a result of the ongoing investigation, Shawn BRUNET, 20 years old, of Kapuskasing has been charged with the following offences:

  • Arson - Disregard for human life, as per section 433 of the Criminal Code (CC) (Two counts)
  • Extortion, as per section 346, CC
  • Intimidation of a Justice Participant, as per section 423.1(1), CC
  • Fail to Comply with Recognizance, as per section 145(3), CC (Four counts)
  • Criminal Harassment, as per section 264(1)(a), CC

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane on May 29, 2015. The investigation is continuing.
