Students get a lesson on bullying (5 photos)

Students at L'École publique Lionel-Gauthier received some importation information about sharing with others, listening and paying attention to teachers and parents, bullying and being nice to one another.

Another key point of the presentation was that students should feel comfortable about going to a trusted adult, such as a parent or teacher, to let someone know if they feel bullied.

The assembly featured the talent of Retro Bill.

Retro Bill is a motivational speaker from California who performs for students in kindergarten through to Grade 12.

He has been doing so for the past 13 years, and is the official International D.A.R.E Safety and Self Esteem Buddy.

Local Drug Abuse and Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program Officer Constable Rick Lemieux was also at the assembly assisting in teaching the children about the importance of sharing with others.

Constable Rick Lemieux, who also attended a Retro Bill performance during a 2007 D.A.R.E conference, advised that Retro Bill has his own unique approach to delivering the valuable information to people of all ages and tailors his performances to the audience that he is performing for.

During the 2007 conference, Retro Bill’s audience was a group of D.A.R.E officers.

Retro Bill’s skills and performance during the conference brought the idea of having him as a guest speaker in Timmins.

The job of D.A.R.E officers like Constable Rick Lemieux is to teach students about the dangers of drug abuse, bullying and the approach that Retro Bill uses is quite different as he aims to entertain and inspire the children in a fun, entertaining presentation.

“It influences the young ones to be nice to one another, middle school students are shown the importance of working hard in school, while the high school students are asked to write down their dreams and he motivates them that way,” said Lemieux regarding the importance of such information being given to students.

Retro Bill will also be preforming at other schools around the city this week, at the Timmins Comedy Festival’s Family Comedy Show and The Showcase Gala.

The Family Comedy Show takes place on March 28, 2015 at L'École secondaire catholique Theriault at 2 p.m.
