KIRKLAND LAKE - The holiday season is upon us, and the Kirkland Lake Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) remind motorists of the danger of mixing alcohol and other drugs with driving.

From November 24, 2014 to January 2, 2015 the Kirkland Lake OPP will team up with police services across the province for the annual Festive R.I.D.E (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign.

The Festive R.I.D.E roadside checkpoints have become a familiar part of the holiday season and an effective countermeasure to the road safety issue of impaired driving.

Impaired driving remains the leading criminal cause of death in Canada.

Having ‘one too many’ is a crime once you get behind the wheel.

Kirkland Lake OPP officers will be out in area neighbourhoods in an effort to remove the threat of the impaired driver, and reduce the death toll on Ontario roads.

One drink can reduce your ability to concentrate and slow reaction time.

The more alcohol in your blood, the more trouble you have judging distances.

Drivers who blow over the legal limit (.08) or refuse a breath test will have their driver’s licences suspended immediately for 90 days under Ontario’s Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension Program.

This 90 day suspension is separate and distinct from any criminal charges.

If a person has consumed alcohol beverages the alternatives to driving are, call a family member to pick you up, have a designated driver in your group, call for a taxi or if accommodations are available stay where you are.

It’s never right to drink and drive, even one drink can impair your ability to react to situations.

Only time can reduce your blood alcohol level.

Drinking black coffee or strenuous exercise for example will not hasten the elimination of alcohol from your system.

Staff Sergeant Rick Witty Kirkland Lake OPP Detachment Commander states, “the R.I.D.E program has proven to be an effective deterrent and important tool to educate the driving public about the dangers of impaired driving. Kirkland Lake OPP officers will be doing their part to remove impaired drivers from our roadways. Please do yours by not drinking and driving.”
