KAPUSKASING – Following the numerous recent thefts of contents within motor vehicles in the town of Kapuskasing, the James Bay Detachments Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging citizens to "Lock It or Lose It."

Living in a small town far from the big city can create the illusion that crime doesn’t exist.

That false sense of security can lead people to leave their car doors unlocked and even their engine running.

The goal of the OPP is to encourage drivers to take a few simple precautions that will protect their vehicles from theft.

An unlocked door or an open window is an invitation to thieves to take your loose change, your cell phone or your wallet.

These thefts are crimes of opportunity that are unnecessary and are very easily prevented by following these few simple steps:

  • Roll up vehicle windows
  • Keep valuables out of sight or remove them from the vehicle;
  • Lock the doors; and
  • Pocket the keys

The key to protecting your vehicle is in your hands. Keep yourself from becoming an easy target by properly securing your vehicle.

The OPP would like to remind everyone to report suspicious persons who are lurking near vehicles by calling 1-888-310-1122.

Remember: “Crime prevention is every one’s responsibility!”
