Northern College hosted four delegates from China’s Chongqing Industry Polytechnic College (CIPC) at the Timmins Campus on Monday.
The visit formalized a new joint venture partnership between the institutions which will see Northern College programming offered at CIPC starting September 2015.
CIPC, which has over 12,000 enrolled students, is located in Chongqing Province in southeast China, formerly known as Chungking.
Chongqing is one of four Chinese provincial-level municipalities, a city with nearly 30-million residents which has been granted provincial status.
Chongqing is one of the fastest growing cities in the world.
The delegation from CIPC, which was led by President Li Shiyu, met with a team of Northern College staff, including President Fred Gibbons.
Northern identified CIPC as a potential partner institution due to a strong alignment in programming at both institutions, particularly in the areas of business and engineering technician and technology programming.
The new joint venture partnership between the institutions will see four Northern College programs delivered in English at CIPC; Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technician, Mechanical Engineering Technician, Motive Power Technician – Automotive Service and Business Accounting.
All Northern programming offered at CIPC will feature identical curriculum to what Northern offers in Canada.
Students who enroll in a Northern College program at CIPC will be registered as Northern College students, and will earn an Ontario-based Northern College diploma upon graduation.
The agreement also provides opportunities for student and faculty exchanges.
Northern College students attending CIPC will have the opportunity to study at one of Northern’s campuses in their final year of study.
Chinese faculty members will receive training at Northern’s Timmins and Haileybury campuses.

Northern College has been pursuing joint venture partnerships with various Chinese post-secondary institutions after establishing its first partnership with Yangzhou College of the Environment and Resources in 2010.
The college has since established partnerships with Taizhou University, Xinxiang University, Anhui Vocational and Technical College and now Chongqing Industry Polytechnic College.
