District School Board Ontario North East trustee Howard Archibald has been named the 2014 recipient of the Ontario Public School Board Association’s Bernadine Yackman Memorial Award.
The late Bernadine Yackman was a trustee on the Sudbury Board of Education and an active director of the Northern Ontario School Trustees’ Association.
The award recognizes dedication, commitment and an outstanding contribution to education with special recognition for Northern Ontario service.
A respected leader in the Taykwa Tagamou Nation near Cochrane, Archibald is a Cree elder, former band council member, and longtime trustee who is a strong advocate for Aboriginal Education.
“Howard has worked tirelessly for the last twenty plus years to develop, enhance and expand educational opportunities for First Nations students and adults within the jurisdiction of both DSB Ontario North East and its predecessor Boards,” says Director of Education Linda Knight.
“His passion for our Aboriginal people, his dedication to their educational and employment opportunities and his strong, positive personality continue to benefit our First Nations’ students, their communities, employers and North Eastern Ontario communities in general.”
