HAILEYBURY - Northern College is preparing to host a ground breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the Haileybury Campus residence.

The event will be held on Monday, July 28, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at the Haileybury Campus’s RockWalk Park.

A mirror of the original plans, the new residence will provide accommodation for 64 students.

The four-story building will consist of 16 apartment-style units.

Each apartment will include four bedrooms, a kitchen with an eat-in dining area, a living room, and two bathrooms.

Construction is scheduled to be complete August 2015, in time to accept students for the 2015 - 2016 academic year.

The residence will be located on campus in RockWalk Park.

The college is working with the RockWalk Committee to determine new locations for park features that could be displaced by the development.

The Haileybury Campus residence is being built by Campus Living Centres, who will also assume operations once it is complete.

Campus Living Centres is the largest owner and operator of student housing in Canada.

They have worked with several northern Ontario colleges, including Collège Boréal, Cambrian College, Canadore College and Confederation College.

“The Haileybury Campus is home to both our immensely successful School of Veterinary Sciences and the world-renowned Haileybury School of Mines,” says Fred Gibbons, President of Northern College. “This campus attracts a number of students from outside of the Temiskaming Shores area who would certainly benefit from an on-campus housing option. We’re pleased to be working with Campus Living Centres to make this residence a reality, and to help build capacity at our Haileybury Campus.”

The demand for accommodations at the Haileybury Campus arises from a dramatic increase in enrolment due to the introduction and expansion of the college’s School of Veterinary Sciences.
